Lights up on Washington Heights...The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.

Over a 70+ year career, Rita Moreno defied both her humble upbringing and relentless racism to become a celebrated and beloved actor, one of the rare EGOT Award Winners of our time. Born into poverty on a Puerto Rican farm, Moreno and her seamstress mother immigrated to New York City when Moreno was five years old. After studying dance and performing on Broadway, Moreno was cast as any ethnic minority the Hollywood studios needed filled, be it Polynesian, Native American or Egyptian. Despite becoming the first Latina actress to win an Academy Award for her role as Anita in "West Side Story" (1961), the studios continued to offer Moreno lesser roles as stereotypical ethnic minorities, ignoring her proven talent. The film illuminates the humor and the grace of Moreno, as well as lesser-known struggles faced on her path to stardom, including pernicious Hollywood sexism and abuse, a toxic relationship with Marlon Brando, and serious depression a year before she emerged an Oscar winner.

Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams — writers, celebrities, geniuses — catapulted to fame in the 1950s, sparking a friendship and rivalry spanning nearly 40 years until their deaths within a year of each other. Inextricably entwined, and fixtures of their age, they were creative powerhouses (and gay men) who dealt with success and its evanescence in vastly different ways. In Truman & Tennessee: An Intimate Conversation, filmmaker Lisa Immordino Vreeland brings the two forces together in a unique and fascinating tête-à-tête, comparing and contrasting their trajectories through dueling voices — the writers' own, culled from archival footage, and the voices of actors Jim Parsons and Zachary Quinto portraying, respectively, Capote and Williams at various stages of their lives. Both created rich, imaginary worlds and characters that left indelible marks on the era — and both paid the price of colossal success and fame through alcoholism and periods of artistic stagnation.

The next great innovation revolution: CRISPR, gene editing, and Jennifer Doudna

The bestselling author of Leonardo da Vinci, Einstein, and Steve Jobsreturns with a gripping account of how Nobel prize winner Jennifer Doudna and her colleagues launched a revolution that will allow us to cure diseases, fend off viruses, and improve the human species.

Bestselling author Walter Isaacson has established himself as the biographer of creativity, innovation, and genius. Einstein was the genius of the revolution in physics, and Steve Jobs was the genius of the revolution in digital technology. We are now on the cusp of a third revolution in science, a revolution in biochemistry that is capable of curing diseases, fending off viruses, and improving the human species itself. The genius at the center of his newest book, The Code Breaker (available on March 9, 2021), is American biochemist Jennifer Doudna (pronounced DOWD-nuh), who is considered one of the prime inventors of CRISPR, a system that can edit DNA.

MEMBERS' PREVIEW

Members will be among the first to view the Museum's new exhibition, Tomashi Jackson: The Land Claim, with a special program at 12PM and enhanced benefits throughout the day. Tomashi Jackson: The Land Claim is organized by Corinne Erni, Senior Curator of ArtsReach and Special Projects, who will engage artist Tomashi Jackson in conversation in the Lichtenstein Theater at noon.

Members are invited to take advantage of free admission for one guest per Member per visit and increased discounts in the Shop and Café with 20% off.

Space is limited and advanced registration required.

About the Exhibition

Tomashi Jackson (born 1980, Houston, TX) is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, textiles, sculpture, and video to place formal and material investigations in dialogue with recent histories of displacement and disenfranchisement of people of color, resulting in formalist compositions of exuberant color, bold geometries, and intricate layerings of material. Jackson's continued investigation into color, light, and perception, and the effects of these on the value of human life in public space is inspired by Josef Albers's research on the relativity of color.

Jackson was invited as part of the Parrish Art Museum's 2021 annual invitation to an artist to consider the entire Museum as a site for works that transcend disciplinary boundaries, encouraging new ways to experience art, architecture, landscape, and community.

Tomashi Jackson: The Land Claim focuses on the historic and contemporary lived experiences of Indigenous, Black, and Latinx families on the East End of Long Island, and how issues of housing, transportation, livelihood, migration, and agriculture link these communities.

FINAL ACCOUNT is an urgent portrait of the last living generation of everyday people to participate in Adolf Hitler's Third Reich. Over a decade in the making, the film raises vital, timely questions about authority, conformity, complicity and perpetration, national identity, and responsibility, as men and women ranging from former SS members to civilians in never-before-seen interviews reckon with — in very different ways — their memories, perceptions and personal appraisals of their own roles in the greatest human crimes in history.

acoupleofpuppets.com

30 minutes, ages 3-8, hand puppets

For hundreds of years, the Punch & Judy puppet tradition has been a popular treat. In this updated version Punch & Judy cook up some wacky fun in the kitchen. Hand-carved puppets created and performed by Liz Joyce & A Couple of Puppets. This show is great for festivals and outdoor events

Trained as a fine artist, Liz also was certified in Art Education K-12. In the early stages of her career, Liz worked with and apprenticed with Terry Snyder, a master puppeteer from Richmond, Virginia. Her artistic approach to puppetry has also been influenced by European puppetry traditions and the eccentric energy of New York's downtown performance artists. She honed her carving skills working with traditional puppet carvers in Prague, Czech Republic, and often collaborates with other puppeteers in the international puppet community. Liz's puppet operetta, Sing a Song of Sixpence was awarded an UNIMA Citation, the highest award in American puppetry. Since 2001, Liz has hosted many talented puppeteers at Goat on a Boat Puppet Theatre in Sag Harbor, NY where she is founder and artistic director. She recently served on the Board of Directors for the Jim Henson Foundation and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Puppeteers of America and the Puppetry Guild of Greater New York.

GATHER: CONVERSATIONS LED BY BLACK AND INDIGENOUS CHANGE-MAKERS
LEFT BEHIND/WITHIN
Guild Hall
GATHER: Conversations led by Black and Indigenous Change-Makers is a celebration of the East End's diversity, a recognition of fault and colonization, and, most importantly, an opportunity to build and implement new understandings. Devised specifically for community leaders, service workers, teachers, and developers, this series platforms the voices and experiences of various BIPOC scholars, artists, and leaders, providing both lessons on our past histories, and strategies and examples of how to progress forward together. The series spans from Friday, July 16 – Monday, July 19.

Left Behind/WithinPoet and storyteller, Andrina Wekontash Smith welcomes audiences for a shared-meal and an evening of spoken word and communal discussion, reflecting on her relationship to her ancestors and the inherited griefs Shinnecock hold but are told to leave behind.

This event is held outdoors at Ma's House & BIPOC Studio on Shinnecock. All are asked to bring their own seating – blanket, mat, etc.

This iteration of GATHER is programmed in tandem with the Guild Hall exhibition, Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks. Proceeds from this series aid the education initiatives at Guild Hall of East Hampton, the development of Ma's House & BIPOC Art Studio, and the institutions and artists involved.

Film to Start at Dusk

Despite living a life of extreme poverty in Brooklyn, graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (Jeffrey Wright) strives to rise up through the heady New York art scene of the 1970s and 1980s. He becomes the brightest star of neo-Expressionist painting and one of the most successful painters of his time, and even develops a friendship with Andy Warhol (David Bowie). But Basquiat's tumultuous life, specifically his addiction to heroin, overshadows his rise to fame, threatening all.

Community Artist-In-Residence Scott Bluedorn will lead a series of open studio painting workshops in Guild Hall's Minikes Garden as a part of his residency project. Scott's project is focused on the history, practice, and revitalization of "The Tile Club;" a group of artists from the late 19th century, who met and painted on decorative tiles, often en plein air, on the Eastern End of Long Island.

Scott will host these open studios once a month during the extended Museum hours on Saturdays in June, July and August. During these free workshops our concessions will be open and artists will paint on tiles provided by Guild Hall and are asked to bring their own acrylic paints, brushes, water jar, and palette. We ask that each participant gives at least one tile to Guild Hall to be included in a final installation culminating this project in the Fall of 2021.

BOOK TALK: WHALING CAPTAINS OF COLOR WITH AUTHOR, SKIP FINLEYJoin Donnamarie Barnes and Dr. Georgette Grier Key in conversation with Skip Finley, author of "Whaling Captains of Color; America's First Meritocracy"

Many of the historic houses that decorate Skip Finley's native Martha's Vineyard were originally built by whaling captains. Whether in his village of Oak Bluffs, on the Island of Nantucket where whaling burgeoned, or in New Bedford, which became the City of Light thanks to whale oil, these magnificent homes testify to the money made from whaling. In terms of oil, the triangle connecting Martha's Vineyard to these areas and Eastern Long Island was the Middle East of its day. Whale wealth was astronomical, and endures in the form of land trusts, roads, hotels, docks, businesses, homes, churches and parks. Whaling revenues were invested into railroads and the textile industry. Millions of whales died in the 200-plus-year enterprise, with more than 2,700 ships built for chasing, killing and processing them. Whaling was the first American industry to exhibit any diversity, and the proportion of men of color people who participated was amazingly high. A man got to be captain not because he was white or well connected, but because he knew how to kill a whale. Along the way he would also learn navigation and how to read and write. Whaling presented a tantalizing alternative to mainland life. Working with archival records at whaling museums, in libraries, from private archives and studying hundreds of books and thesis, Finley culls the best stories from the lives of over 50 Whaling Captains of Color to share the story of America's First Meritocracy.

Chief Harry Wallace and Tecumseh Ceaser lead an open dialogue and lecture on the understandings, teachings, and significance of Wampum. The conversation will touch on traditional practices, historical accounts and lessons, and what contemporary carvers have "learned from the shell."

"Wampum has been used in my culture in ceremonies, regalia, trade agreements, and treaties to connect our people and remind them of their connection to the water and earth, which gives us life and food. We as eastern woodland natives treasure wampum; its beautiful colors allow us to wear it with pride and know that our ancestors have been working with it for thousands of years. My artwork allows me to connect with my ancestors by carrying on their traditions and saying to the world we are still here, and we are still connected with our genealogical ties to the land."Tecumseh Ceaser

Join us for an evening celebrating Tom Wolfe, also affectionately known as the Man in the White Suit. Winner of a National Book Award for The Right Stuff and National Book Award Finalist for his first novel Bonfire of the Vanities, Tom Wolfe was more than a writer. Wolfe was a massive cultural figure, who changed journalism in America as a founder of "new journalism", who changed the conversation around popular figures like Ken Kesey and his "Merry Pranksters" of the '60s, Astronauts, and George W Bush. Wolfe introduced several phrases into the American vernacular, including "statusphere", "radical chic", "right stuff", and "the me decade". We are delighted to present an evening of the wit and cultural insights of Tom Wolfe, which will include excerpts from his novels, short works, articles, and interviews – all told through our performers each costumed in Wolfe's iconic white suit.

Before his worldwide smash,PARASITE, Korean Director Bong Joon-ho's OKJA offered early evidence of genius at work. A spiralling, globe-trotting tale of one young girl's love for her SuperPig, OKJA boasts a smorgasbord of acting talent, including Jake Gyllenhall, Tilda Swinton, and Steven Yuen. But it is the searing, elemental performance of young Korean actress Ahn Seo-Hyun that anchors this action packed, deeply moving tale of one young girl against the capitalist machine.

The 2021 Clothesline Art Sale is almost here! Clothesline is one of the most beloved and affordable art traditions in the Hamptons since its inception in 1946. For 75 years, it has provided accessible artwork to the community, while supporting the local artists who thrive here. Throughout our history, great artists such as Alfonso Ossorio, James Brooks, John Little, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and Elaine and Willem de Kooning have shared their talents to support Guild Hall in this unique annual fundraising effort.

Over 300 artists enter the sale each year and art lovers everywhere flock to Guild Hall looking for their next masterpiece. Works range in price from $75 to $5,000 with all proceeds split 50/50 between the artist and Guild Hall.

While we celebrate our 90th Anniversary this year, we continue to reimagine our programs and how we can bring them to the public safely. We are so excited to continue the tradition of Clothesline in its 75th year by holding the sale outdoors on the grounds of Guild Hall following all social-distancing protocols and government safety guidelines.

We are also utilizing a touchless online-only purchasing system that will allow for safe and easy check-out, while also allowing you to shop from the comfort of your home.

This annual event is a celebration of community, unity, and fellowship, that is what has been said about the Fish Fry and what it means to the greater community. The fish fry will transport you back in time and is a staple event that is known to draw people from far and near ! The Fish Fry started out as a fundraiser that was done on the grounds of the Historic St. David AME Zion.

The beginnings of the Fish Fry had a meager beginning, when people actually cooked with LOVE, and that is what "Soul Food" is all about, no measuring cups (just a little pinch and smidgen of this and that and a lot of praying and well wishing). There was a time when people needed their soul's feed, to break bread with their neighbor, say hello, how you doing, how are the children, and the invitation was extended? The mission, survival and longevity of the Fish Fry is a friend-raiser and huge success because it depends on the participation of members, friends and the greater community who wouldn't have it any other way.

Eastville's Fish Fry is a family reunion of sorts, an event where catch-up with pals you haven't seen in years; or make new friends; an event where the good of the welfare of others is an concerned; an event where you see all whom call this special place home made it back safely and hopefully in one piece.

The Fish Fry is an event where everyone can slow down a bit; congregate and smile ear to ear; there is no shortage of hugs either. Last but not least, the food is always the main attraction, that's how we get all of the smiles, hugs just all-around good vibes. Vic's Heart "N' Soul will be our vender this year.

We invite the press to attend, take pictures, talk to people and say hello!

The Lost Leonardo tells the inside story behind the Salvator Mundi, the most expensive painting ever sold at $450 million, claimed to be a long-lost masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci. From the moment it is purchased from a shady New Orleans auction house, and its buyers discover masterful brushstrokes beneath its cheap restoration, the fate of the Salvator Mundi is driven by an insatiable quest for fame, money and power. But as its price soars, so do questions about its authenticity. Is this multi-million dollar painting actually by Leonardo – or do certain power players simply want it to be? Unravelling the hidden agendas of the world's richest men and most powerful art institutions, The Lost Leonardo reveals how vested interests became all-important, and the truth secondary. Following the screening, HamptonsFilm Co-Chairman Alec Baldwin and HamptonsFilm Artistic Director David Nugent will lead a conversation with the filmmakers and guests.

Community Artist In Residence, Scott Bluedorn will lead a series of plein air painting workshops as a part of his residency project with Guild Hall. Scott's project is focused on the history, practice, and revitalization of "The Tile Club;" a group of artists from the late 19th century, who met and painted on decorative tiles, often en plein air, on the Eastern End of Long Island.

Scott will host artists once a month on Wednesdays in June, July and August at the following locations: Camp Hero in Montauk, Gerard Drive in Springs, and Mulford Farm in East Hampton. During these free workshops artists will paint on tiles provided by Guild Hall and are asked to bring their own acrylic paints, brushes, water jar, palette, and protective weather gear. We ask that each participant gives at least one tile to Guild Hall to be included in a final installation culminating this project in the Fall of 2021.

For the first time ever, Guild Hall pulls out all the stops and uses our own parking lot as an immersive performance space. Part-tribute, part live-archive, part new work, GET DANCING is an evening of downtown dance history re-imagined. Presented in partnership with The Watermill Center, the program includes dances from the 1970s by the late choreographer Andy de Groat re-staged by Catherine Galasso, as well as Galasso's notes on de groat featuring original choreography and a contextualization of de Groat's legacy, revealing "an aesthetic of task lifted by beautiful music, of circles of the mind, of patience and poetry" (Wendy Perron, 2016).

Andy de Groat emerged as a choreographer in the 1970s. His early choreography places spinning and pedestrian movement within a complex framework, presented with a keen sense of timing, phrasing, and rhythm. He is known for numerous collaborations with Robert Wilson, including the choreography for the original Einstein on the Beach in 1976. de Groat and his company, red notes, were based in France for 30 years where he was nominated twice to the National Order of Arts and Letters. This collaboration with Galasso, created while de Groat was still living, was commissioned by Danspace Project, developed at The Watermill Center, and nominated for a New York "Bessie."

Galasso will once again re-stage de Groatʼs Fan Dance and Get Wreck, this time with local community performers from the East End, alongside Galasso's company dancers. The program also includes a film by Jon Meaney and Andrew Horn of de Groatʼs Rope Dance Translations (1979), as well as music by Catherine Galassoʼs father and frequent de Groat collaborator, the César Award-winning composer Michael Galasso, who is best known for his soundtrack for Wong Kar Waiʼs In The Mood For Love.
