Guild Hall
Suzanne Sylvor, President of Volunteers of Guild Hall (VoGH), has announced VoGH's first web-based art exhibition showcasing VoGH artist members. "After our successful 2019 exhibit at the Amagansett Library, we wanted to continue in a COVID-safe, winter-warm location. What could be more welcoming than our own website?" said Sylvor. The exhibition website will launch on January 1, 2022 and will be online for three months, closing March 31, 2022.

The artist members support Guild Hall's 90-year tradition of interest in all aspects of the arts: volunteering at Guild Hall's theater, galleries, and at special events. Many of the artists exhibit and sell at major and local galleries and have their own websites. The artwork will be available to purchase, and interested buyers can contact the artists directly about those exhibited and other works.

Participating artists are include Pamela M. Abrahams, Nancy Brody, Carol David, Elli Dukofsky, Maris Elman, Dale Grant, Ronnie Grill, Barbara Groot, Lorraine Papacosta, Rosa Hanna Scott, Karen Simon, Suzanne Sylvor, Ursula Thomas, Irwin Weinbaum, Susannah Weinbaum, and Judith Wit.

Scott Chaskey is a poet, farmer, and educator. For 30 years he cultivated garlic, greens, potatoes, and sixty other crops for the Peconic Land Trust at Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett, one of the original CSA's in the country. A pioneer of the Community Supported Agriculture movement, he is past president of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York, and was honored as Farmer of the Year in 2013. "Seedtime," by Scott Chaskey, has been called "a celebration as well as a call to action urging us to renew our role as citizens of nature, in Aldo Leopold's phrase, not as conquerors of it." For this presentation Scott will also read from his work-in-progress, Soil and Spirit, to be published by Milkweed Editions, in 2022.

Introduced by Alicia Longwell, Ph.D., The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator, Marcel Duchamp: The Art of the Possible explores the life, philosophy, and impact of one of the most influential early 20th century modernists, Marcel Duchamp. The film breaks down Duchamp's ideas and applies them to both historical events and the modernist explosion that blanketed the early 20th century. Marcel Duchamp: The Art of the Possible isn't simply a biopic; rather, the film shows how Duchamp's ideas changed the public consciousness, and our understanding of aesthetics, art, and culture. The film highlights the singular impact of Duchamp's philosophy on art, and, more importantly, examines how Duchamp's revolutionary ideas from the early 20th century have shaped the 21st century and modern day.

Ultimately, Marcel Duchamp: The Art of the Possible is a guide to exploring the possibilities in every artistic endeavor and showcasing how Duchamp's ideas gave generations of artists the intellectual backing to pursue new ideas.

Featuring Jeff Koons, Marina Abramovic, Larry Bell, Ed Ruscha, Michel Gondry, Paul Matisse, Edward Ruscha, Stefan Sagmeister, Bibbe Hansen, Arturo Schwarz, Carolee Schneemann and more.

Join Parrish Collection artist and fine art photographer Jeremy Dennis, member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation, for an evening-length program featuring a short documentary and conversation about an artist residency he founded and a postcard workshop to draw attention to the sacred land of the Shinnecock Hills.

In the documentary, Ma's House, presented as part of the ALL ARTS ongoing initiative The First Twenty, Dennis discusses the building of Ma's House & BIPOC Art Studio, an artist retreat and communal art space on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton. With the studio, Dennis aims to provide a safe space for free creativity and healing for BIPOC artists. The film explores the challenges he and his family met while renovating his grandmother's house and how he hopes the space will serve the community now and in the future.

During the second part of the evening, visitors are invited to participate in a workshop with the artist designing postcards advocating for a building moratorium in Shinnecock Hills. Dennis will share a brief background about Shinnecock Hills and its significance to the Shinnecock Nation, answer any questions, and show how to create postcards. Materials will be provided.

"The Shinnecock Hills are a sacred landscape for the Shinnecock People," says Jeremy Dennis. "Ancestors, dating back over three thousand years, are buried here. In 1859, Southampton Town stole the Shinnecock Hills using lies, deceit, and forged signatures. The Shinnecock Nation pursued and received Federal Recognition to regain these lands with the help of New York State but have yet to receive support from any NYS Governor that has held office since 2010."

Please join historian Sandi Brewster-Walker for a lively discussion on the crew of color who lived and worked at East Quogue's Tiana Lookout Barracks Station during WWII. Originally built in 1871 as Tiana Life-Saving Station, the building was used as a Coast Guard barracks from 1942-1944. Ms. Brewster-Walker's talk questions the true purpose of the segregated Tiana Lookout Barracks station and encompasses the contributions of local men of color on merchant, whaling and U.S. cutter ships throughout Long Island's maritime history.

Larry Rivers—painter, sculptor, poet and musician—defied categorization but was nevertheless an established and very successful artist of the late 20th century. He was recognized for his large paintings that merged abstraction with images—often with irony--and was known nearly as well for his lively, unconventional lifestyle. He maintained residences/studios in New York and Southampton, where he cut a colorful figure dressed as a hipster and zooming through town on his motorcycle.
