Malve von Hassell explores the inspirations for her book The Amber Crane, a historical fiction time-slip novel set in two devastating wars three hundred years apart and steeped in the lore and legends of amber from the shores of the Baltic Sea. This includes the Thirty Years War, the role of amber in the local economy, and the chaotic evacuation from that same region at the end of World War II. She also addresses the importance of history in a part of the world where much of local history has been erased.

Prolific writer Joyce Carol Oates has remained intensely private. Until now. Through a long-standing friendship and persistent inquiry, director Stig Björkman was granted unprecedented access to document her mornings of longhand writing, her walks with her husband and to visit her within her solitude.

Stig Björkman is a Swedish writer, film director and film critic. He has written a number of books on the art of film and interview books with, among others, Ingmar Bergman, Woody Allen and Lars von Trier. As a director he made his debut with the short film Letitia (1964) and his feature film debut with Jag älskar, du älskar (1968). After making a number of internationally distributed documentary films about Ingmar Bergman, Björkman was asked, facing the 100th anniversary of Ingrid Bergman's birth, by daughter Isabella Rossellini if he would undertake the making of a filmography about Bergman, based on her private diaries and films in the family's private collection. The two-hour film Jag är Ingrid attracted attention at the premiere at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where Ingrid Bergman was the festival's main personality of the year.

The Opening Night film is sponsored by Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.

The ancient Greek myth of Orpheus, who attempts to harness the power of music to rescue his beloved Eurydice from the underworld, has inspired composers since opera's earliest days. Brilliant American composer Matthew Aucoin now carries that tradition into the 21st century with a captivating new take on the story—a product of the Met's commissioning program. With a libretto by Sarah Ruhl, adapted from her acclaimed 2003 play, the opera reimagines the familiar tale from Eurydice's point of view. Yannick Nézet-Séguin oversees the December 4 transmission, leading Aucoin's evocative music and an immersive new staging by Mary Zimmerman. Soprano Erin Morley sings the title role, opposite baritone Joshua Hopkins as Orpheus and countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński as his otherworldly alter-ego. Bass-baritone Nathan Berg is Eurydice's father and fellow resident of the underworld, with tenor Barry Banks as Hades himself. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met's award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

Learn more about this opera with a FREE pre-opera lecture with Behind the Screen with Bel Canto Boot Camp. Join us before the screening for a participatory and in depth analysis with BCBC co-founders Rachelle Jonck and Derrick Goff.

With a cast of 8, Third Bird tells the story of a flying bluebird, a swimming duck, and a running ostrich and celebrates each of their unique strengths. The work was commissioned by Work & Process - an organization led by Producer Caroline Cronson and General Manager Duke Dang, that nurtures and champions new works, amplifies underrepresented voices and performing arts cultures, and offers audiences unprecedented access to generations of leading creators and performers. Works & Process has previously worked with Isaac Mizrahi on a highly successful production of Sergei Prokofiev's charming children's classic Peter & The Wolf.

Commissioned by Works & Process Third Bird was developed in a Works & Process bubble residency at Catskill Mountain Foundation in Spring 2021, made possible through the generous support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. The Music for Third Birds was made possible, in part by the Ellis L. Phillips Foundation. Third Bird will receive a Works & Process LaunchPAD residency at The Church, Sag Harbor in early December 2021. The Church and Guild Hall are collaborating on a community event around Third Bird. Third Bird will have its world premiere at Works & Process at the Guggenheim Museum on June 3-5, 2022.

"The Lost Boys of Montauk" by Amanda Fairbanks who will be joining us for the discussion.

Amanda M. Fairbanks is a journalist who has worked in the editorial department of The New York Times, as a reporter for HuffPost, and at The East Hampton Star, where she wrote investigative stories, features, and profiles. Her writing has also appeared in The Boston Globe, Newsweek, The Atlantic, and The San Francisco Chronicle. A graduate of Smith College and a former Teach for America corps member, she has two master's degrees from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, and currently lives with her family in Sag Harbor. In this book, she examines the profound shift of Montauk from a working-class village-"a drinking town with a fishing problem"-to a playground for the ultra-wealthy, seeking out the reasons that an event more than three decades old remains so startlingly vivid in people's minds. She explores the ways in which deep, lasting grief can alter people's memories through the tragedy of Wind Blown, a commercial fishing boat. And she shines a light on the powerful and sometimes painful dynamics between fathers and sons, as well as the secrets that can haunt families from beyond the grave.

The book is available through the Suffolk County Cooperative Library System for interlibrary loan, as well as for purchase or download on Amazon.

Society members and the public are welcome at no charge.

Registration is required.

Indigenous food sovereignty is the ability to grow, eat, and share food according to their own traditions and values. The teachings of indigenous traditions have been passed down from generation to generation. From fishing, to hunting, to foraging and harvest, these are all traditional food ways of indigenous peoples. However, due to the laws that have been made against their way of living, there is a constant fight for survival of Indigenous Peoples.

This lecture will help to provide the indigenous perspective on Indigenous foods.

Christina Strassfield has known Jeff Muhs for 30 years and has followed his work's evolution. Join her as she asks in-depth questions on how and what his inspiration is for creating these unique works of art and what compels him to work across different media simultaneously.

Jeff Muhs was the "Top Honors" winner of the 2018 Artist Members Exhibition, selected by Connie Choi, Associate Curator, The Studio Museum of Harlem, New York. Muhs is a contemporary American artist known for both his paintings and sculptures. Engaged in exploring art history as well as using found materials, the artist's practice includes blurred versions of paintings, expressive abstractions based on the Long Island landscape, and concrete sculptures of female torsos tightly bonded in various materials. Born in 1966 in Southampton, NY, his father was a sculptor who taught Muhs wood carving at a young age. Going on to attend the School of Visual Arts in New York during the mid-1980s, Muhs directed his focus towards painting before returning to sculpture later in his career. The artist's works are held in the collections of the Guild Hall Museum in East Hampton, NY, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, TN, among others. Muhs continues to work from his studio in Southampton, NY.

Having been faithfully covering the music of The Beatles for decades, The Moondogs in their current lineup performed their first live concert at Bay Street Theater in 2014, celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Beatles' 1964 arrival in the United States.

Since that celebrated performance, their special, limited-edition, two-night shows have grown into a well-anticipated annual event.

In 2017 the band returned to perform Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and then again in 2018 to perform the music of George Harrison in celebration of his 75th birthday. Again, in 2019, the band joined Bay Street to perform both Let It Be and Abbey Road. Now, eager fans and Beatles fanatics will have the chance to hear their recreation of the wide-ranging masterpiece known as The White Album.

Jack Dempsey was one of America's first great sports heroes, as famous as Babe Ruth in his time. Fans loved his aggressive two-fisted fighting style, as he chalked up 53 knockout wins, nine draws and only six losses in his fighting career from 1914 to 1927. Boxing was as popular as it would ever be during his reign as heavyweight champion from 1919 to 1926, and more profitable than ever before; he was responsible for the sport's first million-dollar gate. When his career was over, he remained a cultural icon with exhibition bouts, product endorsements and film appearances. He is buried in Southampton Cemetery.

Hamptons Jazz Fest Winter Series and Southampton Arts Center present the Lew Tabackin Trio for a special evening of jazz music.

Lew Tabackin, flutist and tenor saxophonist, is an artist of astonishing vision. His electrifying flute playing is at once virtuosic, primordial, cross-cultural, and passionate. His distinctive tenor sax style includes the use of wide intervals, abrupt changes of mood and tempo, and purposeful fervor, all in the service of showing the full range of possibilities of his instrument - melodically, rhythmically, and dynamically. Without copying or emulating jazz greats of the past, Mr. Tabackin has absorbed elements into his style, ultimately creating his own sound and aura.

General admission with cabaret style and general seating. Tables are first come, first serve. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. At 9 p.m., people are invited to meet and mingle with the musicians.
